HG Wells’ seminal book was way ahead of its time

Author: Heera Abdul Rehman

HG Wells was a great writer having published more than 30 books. The Time Machine was published in 1895. It was his first novel; earlier he was a teacher. After publishing the book, he stopped teaching. The book was a huge success which continues to this day and contains 13 chapters.

In this book, the time traveller eagerly explains what he had said to his six guests about time travellers the first time they wanted to see the past and imagine the future. The guests laugh at him, which makes him quite upset, compelling him to make an exaggerated statement. He wonders if the fourth dimension is time. He first makes a time travelling machine, and he starts to travel through the time machine to the past. He sees his past dinners, whatever he did in his past, he sees it all. He does not think of stopping, he is unable to think of anything but the past.

In the end, he is overtaken by curiosity and dread of strange developments of humanity that are appearing in this new world. The earth seems very beautiful and he does not refuse to accept that.

In the end, he is overtaken by curiosity and dread of strange developments of humanity that are appearing in this new world. The earth seems very beautiful, and he does not refuse to accept that. Then he goes to the future; he sees that his housekeeper is cleaning. Later he sees buildings, he is very happy that now this is the direction of the future. Then he sees a group of fine creatures; he is too disappointed. He thinks that the darkening sky is a simple explanation of this new world. It is reasonable enough. He aces many problems to see the future, and he does not sleep at night.

More than 30 million years into the future, but he only sees a beautiful garden, buildings, groups of children, the sun and the wind. He is quite upset.

Travel with a time machine through thousands of years to get to the future, there he discovers a strange society in which there is nothing but the earth covering some frightening surprises.

At last, he sees again the dim shadows of houses when the dial shows a zero; he decreases his speed and runs back to the starting point. When he returns he sees that his housekeeper is cleaning the room. The time traveller says that life is a dream, a precious poor dream at times, but this one is madness. The time traveller says that this stands as witness that intelligence and companionship will always live in hearts of human beings.
