Security plan finalised for Benazir Bhutto’s death anniversary

KARACHI: As the threats of terrorism are looming, as many as seven thousand police officials and personnel will perform security duties on the occasion of the 9th death anniversary of the former Prime Minister Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto to be held on December 27 as what the Sindh police have finalised the security plan for a day.

Sources in the police said that there are threats of terrorism are looming as what the intelligence agencies have warned the possible terrorist activity on the occasion of BB’s death anniversary, particularly in Garhi Khuda Buksh where besides presence of large number of PPP ‘Jiyalas’, PPP leadership including party’s co-chairman and a chairman are also likely to address the participants.

The intelligence agencies have also asked the authorities and law enforcement agencies concerned to take extra security measures ahead to avoid any untoward incident.

The personnel and the commandoes of the Rapid Response Force (RRF), Special Security Unit (SSU) and Sindh Reserve Police (SRP) would also perform security duties along with the officials and personnel of the various districts of the Sindh including Hyderabad, Thatta, Badin and Police Training Centre Shahdadpur while women police would also perform the security duties, this was informed to a IGP Sindh Mushtaq Maher in a report compiled by Sindh police.

While reviewing the security arrangements, IGP Sindh ordered the police officials concerned to make sure the extra ordinary arrangements during a death anniversary of Pakistan Peoples Party slain chairperson Benazir Bhutto at Garhi Khuda Buksh as the high profile personalities should have to attend the anniversary.

IGP Sindh also directed to enhance security at the Naudero railway station, main arteries of Garhi Khuda Buksh along with the sweeping by the bomb disposal squad at the routes. “Snap checking and patrolling should also be enhanced,” IGP ordered. “Security and traffic issues should be made in consultation with the administration.”

Sources privy to the security arrangements said that 32 Senior Superintendents of Police (SSPs) and 71 Deputy Superintendents of Police (DSPs) will control the security while seven SPs will control the traffic. CCTV cameras would also install.

The Sindh government has already declared December 27 as public holiday on account of death anniversary of former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto. All offices, autonomous or semi-autonomous, working under the Sindh government will remain close as per the notification released by the provincial government.

PPP chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari and Co-chairman Asif Ali Zardari will address the jalsa where according to party important announced will be made. The central executive committee (CEC) meeting of the party will also be held to discuss Panama and others issues. “The CEC meeting will decide the fate of movement against government,” information advisor Maula Bux Chandio said adding that it will be a historic event where thousands of people will gather to pay tribute to Shaheed Benazir Bhutto.
