KARACHI: The provincial government has reached an agreement with a Chinese government to produce electricity from waste matter in Karachi and other parts of Sindh.
The Sindh Chief Minister, Murad Ali Shah, on behalf of the provincial government signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the China Shipbuilding Industry Corporation (CSIC) while on his visit in Beijing. He was there to attend the sixth Joint Committee for Cooperation on the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC).
According to the terms agreed in the MoU, the company would produce electricity made from waster collected in the city and agricultural refuse found in rural parts of the province. . For this purpose, company representatives are expected to Pakistan in the near future to ascertain the level of investment required.
On a related note, the CM also met with representatives of the Changyi Kangjie Sanitation Group to discuss operational plans for cleaning up Karachi.
The company has been hired to manage the disposal of garbage in the south and east districts of the city, with the administration unable to handle the amount of refuse being dumped daily in different parts of Karachi.
The company is expected to being its operations near the end of January or the start of February.
Estimates put the amount of garbage daily generated in the city at more than thousand tones. Most of this waste ends in all manner of spaces with alleyways and roads choked with refuse, some of them for months on end. One of the most common ways used to dispose of the garbage is by burning it, however the smoke that is released results in many health and environmental issues.
