KARACHI: Sindh government’s health department failed to devise a proper strategy to control the viral dengue fever as the dreadful disease claimed 109 lives from 2010 to 2016, while 19,272 others were also affected from the disease during the past seven years.

According to the data collected by Sindh’s Prevention and Control Program for Dengue, a total 19,272 dengue cases were reported from 2010 to 2016, while 109 people died from the fever during last seven years.

The fever claimed 25 lives in 2010, 18 in 2011, 4 in 2012, 32 in 2013, 16 in 2014, 11 in 2015 and three in 2016. Out of the total 19,272 reported cases, 4,072 dengue cases were detected in 2010, 1,079 in 2011, 731 in 2012, 5,970 in 2013, 1,276 in 2014, 3,692 in 2015 and 2,452 in 2016. About 99 per cent deaths and cases were reported from Karachi city.

Experts said that the number of dengue cases could rise much higher as no system was in place to record the actual data while on the other hand, private and government sector hospitals are either not maintaining records or are reluctant to share it with program administration.
