DADU: Speakers at a seminar said that there are as many as 880000 children between 10 to 14 years of age are engaged in child labour in Pakistan and the state has failed to stop child labour from the country. The seminar was organised by the Sujag Sansar, a non-government organisation (NGO). “We are working to eliminate child labour with the support of the federal Ombudsman/National Commissioner for Children and UNICEF. In this regard, about 200 children have been admitted to schools in Taluka Johi of Dadu district,” said Mashooque Birhamani, the chief executive officer of the Sujag Sansar. He said that about 168 million children were involved in child labour globally and Pakistan ranked third, after Mauritania and Haiti, according to The Global Slavery Index 2013.

Muhammad Bux Korari of the Education Department said that parents hand over their school age going innocent children to the mechanics of garages and tolerate their child being beaten and exploited by the employers. Hightailing health hazards of the child labour, Dr Juman Bhutto said that children loose limbs while working on garages and as electrical workers. He said that there was no harm in the work but after attending schools, extends helping hand to the parents.
