Sharif family claims being barred from meeting Nawaz

Leader of the Opposition in National Assembly and former Punjab chief minister Shehbaz Sharif Tuesday lamented that he as well as other family members were not being allowed to meet former prime minister Nawaz Sharif at the Kot Lakhpat Jail.

“Despite repeated requests, I was barred from inquiring after Mian Sahib today too,” he said in a tweet. “My family and I used to meet Nawaz Sharif two to three times in a week so that we stay aware of his medical condition but now our meetings with him have been reduced to Thursdays only,” he said. Slamming the government, the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) president said, “Depriving a mother, sister, brother and daughter of this right is utter injustice.”

Meanwhile, Punjab Information Minister Samsam Bukhari said that no one has stopped Maryam and Shehbaz Sharif from meeting Nawaz at prison. “Nawaz’s health issues should have been resolved way earlier, but he said that he wants to have his treatment abroad,” he said.

A day earlier, Maryam Nawaz had said that it had been five days that she could not have any access to her father. She had said in a tweet that her father was unwell, adding that not even his personal physician had not been allowed to see him.

Federal Information Minister Fawad Chaudhry however had said that Maryam Nawaz meets her father Nawaz Sharif every day. “It is something else if Nawaz Sharif does not want to have meetings,” he had remarked.
