WASHINGTON: US have said Indus Water Treaty (IWT) is an example of peaceful cooperation between Pakistan and India and both countries should address this issue through dialogue.

The State Department spokesperson John Kirby said this in his press briefing here Tuesday. He welcomed Pakistan, China and Russia talks for peace in Afghanistan. “We think that it is responsibility of all neighbouring countries including the Afghan government to achieve the objective of prosperity and establishment of peace in Afghanistan through talks. They should present a constructive solution for peace in Afghanistan.”

To a question, John Kirby said that the decision to lift a ban on Gulbadin Hikmat Yar had to be taken by the UN. About tension between India and Pakistan, he said the secretary of state John Kerry had talked to finance minister Ishaq Dar over the phone on Indus Waters Treaty issue. The US understands that the Indus Waters Treaty has served as a model for peaceful cooperation between Pakistan and India for the last fifty years. Both the countries should sort out any problem with regard to IWT through talks.
