Detoxification of Ochratoxin a from poultry feedstuffs

Author: Huma Mujahid

Poultry industry plays a vital role in providing adequate food for human population in most of the countries. Pakistan is basically an agricultural country with a huge livestock industry, including poultry, a providing not only relatively cheaper protein source for consumers but many job opportunities.

This industry is facing many bottlenecks, such as poultry diseases through feed contamination, which lowers its production capacity. The presence of mycotoxins produced by molds in poultry feed production is the major reason of chick feed toxicity. Ochratoxin A is a mycotoxin produced by certain species of Aspergillus and Pencillium. OTA adversely affect the productive performance in Broilers resulting in increased mortality. So, it is imperative to find a method to detoxify or eliminate this mycotoxin from poultry feed.

Industrial waste materials such as yeast sludge and whey are produced in bulk quantities by alcohol production Industry and Dairy Industry respectively. These waste materials are not only nutritionally beneficial but they also have the potential to detoxify ochratoxin A.

Due to competition with food sources, animal feeds are becoming expensive. This has spurred research into alternative feedstuffs, especially underutilized crops as potential sources of animal feed supplements.

This study focused on the evaluation of WLM as supplements for SBM and GNC in the formulation of feed for broilers. Due to competition with food sources, animal feeds are becoming expensive. This scribe, a student of PhD Biochemistry, IBBT, UVAS, Lahore under the supervision of Dr. Abu Saeed Hashmi has utilized industrial waste materials yeast sludge and whey against the toxic effects of Ochratoxin A.

It was concluded that the industrial waste materials yeast sludge and whey neutralize the adverse effects of mycotoxin ochratoxin A on performance and blood biochemistry parameters in broiler chicken.

These deactivators also improve the return rate on investment indicating that they are economically favourable. It is also shown that the content of OTA in liver and kidney is a good indicator and probably a suitable bio-marker which could demonstrate the exposure of broilers to OTA and improvement in ochratoxicosis by using detoxifying agents.
