Education crisis in rural areas of Balochistan

Author: Adnan Maqsood

Education is a source for a country or a society to prosper. The impact of an education crisis is the sudden rise in unemployment and an increment in out of school children in Balochistan. According to a report released by UNICEF, 70 percent children are out of school in Balochistan, and the highest number of out of school children belong to rural areas. Some bitter facts of the education system in the locations of Balochistan are explored in detail.

Dasht is a well known district situated to the west of Turbat city and considered as one of the districts in Balochistan which is full of small towns with the lowest education and literacy rate. A report was released by counsel students of Dasht who are reading in other cities, many schools in Dasht are nonfunctional and some of them are without teachers. I myself visited during the Eid holidays with my friends who live in Dasht, after seeing the sorry state of education and educational institutions, I felt deeply unhappy while the children were obliviously playing outside in the open boundaries of schools. I asked them what is the reason that they were playing outside? One of them replied what else were they supposed to do when their teachers were concerned about fulfilling their responsibility and would later hand them homework assignments.

On the other hand, Awaran is one of the most beautiful places in Balochistan, where school buildings were destroyed due to a big earthquake in 2013. The government promised to build new buildings, but they have turned their back on their promises. Due to this, the rate of out of school children and child labour increased dramatically in the area.

Like both these areas, there are many schools in rural Pakistan which are not considered as government institutions, moreover, some of the places are not even functional and lack basic school facilities. I always think about the education system in rural areas and try to ask colleagues who came from those places. Te government needs to monitor and ensure quality training of teachers teaching in rural areas. A lot of the teachers their are not fulfilling their responsibilities because there is no accountability check on them. Students need to also be guided and taught subjects which they want to learn about or are areas they are curious to explore. This will give them direction even later on in their lives.

The educational crisis is one of the biggest problems in Balochistan and its rural areas. Thus, the illiteracy rate in Balochistan is going to touch the sky. The government made constitutional changes for the betterment of the people and for their rights which they deserve to get, but rural areas in Balochistan have not been getting the rights are articulated in A-25 about poor students in the country. If we need to succeed, we need to make sure that all the segments of out society prosper and not just a handful born into privilege.
