Sarfraz to miss Australia ODIs after mother falls ill

Author: Staff Report

LAHORE: Wicketkeeper Sarfraz Ahmed is set to return to Pakistan after his mother fell seriously ill in Karachi, a spokesman for the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) said Tuesday. Sarfraz will return to Pakistan on the first available flight to see his mother who is in the Intense Care Unit (ICU) in a hospital here. Sarfraz was rested from the Pakistan’s warm-up game against Cricket Australia XI on Tuesday in Brisbane. Mohammad Rizwan, the other wicketkeeper on tour, kept wickets and scored a run-a-ball 22 not out in the visitors’ 196-run win after scoring 334 for 7. While the PCB is yet to name Sarfraz’s replacement, Kamran Akmal could be in line for a recall after he scored 1035 runs at an average of 79.61 in this season’s Quaid-e-Azam Trophy. Sarfraz’s return is a second blow to the Pakistan One-day International squad, who are to face Australia without paceman Muhammad Irfan, whose mother passed away earlier this week. Irfan will be replaced by Junaid Khan. All-rounder Muhammad Hafeez will join the Pakistan team on Wednesday whereas Junaid will join his teammates on Thursday. Pakistan and Australia will face off in Brisbane on Jan 13.
