PHF manager says federation trying to increase player base

KARACHI: Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF) Team Manager Hanif Khan has said that the PHF is trying to increase the national team’s player base by calling up 74 players for its camp.

The former Olympian, who is also commanding the camp, told media “Among these 74 players, there are a number of players, who are named for the first time for the national senior camp.”

He added, “There has been a complaint against us that our camp revolves around a handful of players. But now we have picked several new faces in order to increase the total number of players under the federation’s radar.”

The camp begins on Thursday at the Abdul Sattar Edhi Hockey Stadium.

Hanif also said, “The players have been picked on the basis of performance at the recently held National Championships in Lahore.”

He added, “We are hopeful that competition will increase and players will try their best to lift their game. We expect we will have a strong team when we embark on Australia, New Zealand and Malaysian tours later this year.”

He further said that the first event the green-shirts would feature in would be held in Australia in March; however the exact dates and teams were yet to be finalised.
