KARACHI: Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) Deputy Mayor Dr Arshad Abdullah Vohra called for the city’s dilapidated sewerage system to be urgently due to the immense problems it created for citizens.

Vohra was speaking at a programme at the Pak Water Expo on Thursday.

He complained that the performance of Karachi Water and Sewerage Board was not satisfactory, noting that it had failed to deliver during past years.

He said, “Sewerage system of city must be replaced to get maximum benefits from K-IV project as this will also take two and a half years for completion. Water supply and sewage lines are mixed causing diarrheal diseases. Federal government should also help us to resolve this issue.”

The deputy mayor also urged the federal government to include the Karachi Circular Railway (KCR) project in the China Pakistan Economic Corridor project, mentioning that this was not being implemented as yet.

He also called for all proposals submitted by Karachi Mayor Wasim Akhtar to be approved at the earliest.

Vohra highlighted the urgent need for water treatment plants in the city, arguing that the government could not afford water desalination plants due to their higher costs.

Responding to a question on the ongoing 100-day cleanliness campaign in the city, he said that they had started a symbolic campaign in 18 of the city’s 209 union councils.

However, Vohra said, the city could not be cleaned solely through this campaign. He added that the administration would gradually initiate such campaigns in all union councils, dependent on the available resources.
