Share some details about yourself
I have been in the field of direction for more than 15 years. I began working as an editor and soon transitioned into direction. Although I have directed many dramas, Meri Beti, Koi Nai Apna, Aisi Hai Tanhai, Balaa and now ‘Cheekh’ are some of my recent projects that have truly stood out.
In view of direction, would you define yourself as a risk taker?
Yes, I think one should take risks in life. If you want to prove yourself in a certain field, you have to play with fire. At times, we become apprehensive. Failures often cause fear but it is the first step towards success. So go ahead and take the risk!
Sometimes our families prevent us from speaking on behalf of somebody who may be a victim. The simple message behind the drama is to speak up; cheekho for your own right
What is the premise of ‘Cheekh’ and why should people watch it?
I try to convey a message in the end with my dramas. In our society, we know what is wrong but we choose not to say it. There is so much pressure on us from the society. Sometimes our families prevent us from speaking on behalf of somebody who may be a victim. The simple message behind the drama is to speak up; cheekho for your own right. Let me share an important point here. The drama’s story or message is not constrained to women only. It is not about gender. Whoever is treated unjustly should be motivated to speak up. This is the most basic answer to the question you have asked.
What was the biggest hurdle in shooting the drama?
There was no such hurdle but ‘Cheekh’ was my life’s most difficult project. There were many locations and it was double the effort. However, I feel blessed that whatever I try to do, the channel, production house and producers Dr Ali Kazmi and Fahad Mustafa always seem to support me.
Are you trying to challenge typecast Pakistani dramas with this serial?
I won’t say that I want to challenge a typecast drama. My only objective is to work on good, well-crafted projects. I try to make dramas that people can learn from and understand. If I get a typecast story, I am certain that I can bring it to life too. My purpose is good storytelling and content. It is imperative for me to understand the story too. If I am able to grasp it, I can create a drama effortlessly.
How do you come through with controversial ideas for dramas and how much conviction is required on your part?
My creative space is not limited to one thing. I discuss the concept with my supportive team and they agree to it. When you have such a good support system, you start working on more ideas. Sometimes they are controversial but it builds up a good story. Unless you have that kind of backing, you will be restricted in thinking and creating the same content.
What features make a good director?
That is a difficult question. When I become a good director, I will answer your question (laughs).
