Bakery admits it copied Donald Trump’s inauguration cake from Barack Obama’s

A bakery has admitted it copied former Obama’s inauguration cake for Donald Trump’s swearing-in ceremony on Friday, it has been reported.

The new president hasn’t even been in office a day and he was already hit with the plagiarism claims after celebrity baker Duff Goldman spotted the similarities between his cake and the one made for Friday’s ceremony.

Sharing photographs of the two bakes, he wrote, “The cake on the left is the one I made for President Obama’s inauguration four years ago. The one on the right is Trump’s. I didn’t make it,” along with a ‘thinking face’ emoji.

Now the firm behind the new cake – Buttercream Bakeshop – has admitted they were asked to copy it.

They said, “While we most love creating original designs, when we are asked to replicate someone else’s work we are thrilled when it is a masterpiece like this one.”

Goldman’s cake was a nine-tier creation, complete with a red-striped base engraved with the presidential seal and had blue stars attached to wires bursting from the top.

According to the New York Daily News, every tier had its own flavour, including a red velvet cake with cream cheese frosting and a lemon with poppy-seed and pineapple cake.

It is not clear if Trump’s cake had the same flavours, but it certainly looks like a dead ringer for Obama’s – right down to the last detail.

Duff is a chef, musician and writer who presented Kids Baking Championship on the Food Network, appeared on Ace of Cakes and runs studio Charm City Cakes.
