Sir: Like many other cities of Pakistan, Islamabad lacks any proper solid waste management system. The huge quantum of solid waste can be seen in various parts of Islamabad. There is a need of collective efforts by the Capital Development Authority (CDA), civil society organisations, environmental bodies, etc, to have a comprehensive solid waste management system comprising solid waste collection, transportation, financing, and fee collection on modern lines.
The media and educational institutions should also come forward to create awareness about minimum service standards, stronger monitoring and evaluation systems. New contracts should be signed with solid waste management companies based on rigorous performance reviews by the citizens’ action committees, civil society, and the media.
