Govt to impose sin tax on tobacco products

ISLAMABAD: Federal Minister for National health Services Aamer Mehmood Khan on Tuesday said that government will impose a sin tax on cigarettes and other tobacco products.

The federal minister while addressing the Annual Public Health Conference said “We are sending a sin tax bill in the National Assembly to impose taxes on cigarettes and tobacco products.”

Aamer further stated that tax generated from this would be spent on the human development and education sector.

Pakistan will follow the Philippines in imposing a sin tax on tobacco.

In 2017, the World Bank cited the sin tax reform in Philippines as among the most successful tobacco taxation which not only increased revenues for the country but also cut down on the number of smokers.
