MOSCOW: The Syrian government and rebels on Tuesday agreed during talks in Kazakhstan’s capital Astana to consolidate a ceasefire and pursue the fight against Daesh and Jabhat Al Nusra militant groups, according to a final statement.
The communique, read out by Kazakhstan’s Foreign Minister Kairat Abdrakhmanov following two days of talks mediated by Russia, Turkey and Iran, said the Geneva platform was the basis for discussion of the Syrian situation between the government and representatives of the armed opposition.
It called for the implementation of international resolutions to reach a political solution in Syria. The communique also stressed on Syria’s independence, unity and sovereignty, and also voiced support for UN special envoy for Syria Staffan De Mistura’s mission and for a multi-ethnic Syria where all its people and sects co-exist in peace.
It also said Syrian armed groups that were present in Astana should participate in UN-sponsored conference due to be held in Geneva on February 8.
