Rs 11 million in upcoming budget to improve cleanliness in Rawalpindi

RAWALPINDI: An amount of Rs.10.75 million will be allocated in the upcoming provincial budget to improve cleanliness in the city.

Talking here on Wednesday Raja Mohammad Hanif, Chairman Rawalpindi Waste Management Company (RWMC), said the Company was disposing 900 tons garbage at Losar daily.

He said on account of RWMC’s satisfactory performance other cities and institutions are seeking our services.

A cleanliness campaign will be initiated from Feb 5 to further improve waste management services in the city.

He further said whereever in the city the company is working you will witness a clean environment, adding the number of workers will be increased to further improve the service.

Raja Hanif said RWMC will take over garbage collection in Kahuta from March whereas the agreement for garbage collection at new Islamabad Airport has been given to RWMC.

Nullah Leh: City Mayor Sardar Mohammad Naseem Khan on Wednesday visited the low lying areas around Nullah Leh to see the ground situation as rain continued in the city.

Talking to media persons, he said the Meteorological Department had forecast heavy rainfall during the current week.

To cope with an anticipated flood situation directions have been issued to Rescue 1122, WASA and Civil Defence to remain alert to meet any situation, he said.

MD WASA, Raja Shaukat, briefed the Mayor about arrangements made for ongoing rain as desilting of Leh had been carried out. He said that more than 70 per cent flood water comes from Islamabad’s catchments areas through four major tributaries of Leh and 11 nullahs of the city also fall into it. He informed that a control room had been set up to monitor the water level in nullah, adding that sirens would be blown if water reached the danger level.

The MD said that residents could contact by toll free number 1334 or Director Sewerage No 0332 5123897 in case of any emergency.

Underpass: With the growing traffic problem on Peshawar Road, a decision has been taken to construct an underpass at Golra Mor Chowk to make it signal free so that the traffic Jam could be avoided. A PC-1 of the project has been devised in this regard, while Rs500 million will be spent on the construction of Golra Mor Chowk.

The decision on the construction of the project has been taken to avoid traffic jam and save the precious time of the public.

According to media reports, MNA Malik Abrar said that the underpass would be constructed from Golra Mor Haji Complex Chowk, while the construction work on the project would be started in the current fiscal year.

He also said that a discussion was under way to start Metro Bus service Loop from Saddar to Peshawar Road leading to Motorway Chowk. These discussions were made during a meeting between MNA Malik Abrar and the National Highway Authority Chairman.

Lawbreakers: Police have arrested 25 lawbreakers including nine Punjab Security Ordinance violators besides recovering 2240 grams charas, 25 litres wine, a pistol of 30 bore with five rounds and one repeater of 12 bore from their possession. According to police spokesman, Cantt police netted Hussain Haider for having 1200 grams charas. R.A.Bazar Police arrested Muhammad Younas with 130 grams charas.

Jalti Police recovered 350 grams charas from the possession of Ishtiaq Hussain. Saddar Baroni Police rounded up Tariq for carrying 560 grams charas. Wah Cantt Police arrested Shan Haider, Khurram Shah, Qamar Shah, Talat and Numan on recovery of drugs.

New Town Police held Zahir with five litres wine while Saddar Wah Police recovered 20 litres wine from Khursheed and 20 litres wine from Sadaqat. Ratta Amral Police rounded up Abdul Rehman and seized a pistol of 30 bore with five rounds. Kotli Sattian Police recovered a repeater of 12 bore from Chanzaib and also conducted a raid at an illegal petrol agency and netted Rasheed.

Meanwhile, police on violation of Punjab Security Ordinance arrested nine people including Qasir, Ghulam Murtaza, Sajjad, Mahmood, Khurram Shehzad, Saddam and Amir Hamza.
