Wrecked transport system

Author: Daily Times

Sir: The most commonly used public transport means in Rawalpindi are Hiace and Suzukis. Rawalpindi has one of the largest networks of local transport still it is totally wrecked. The present system of local transport is so sloppy that a person, who is supposed to reach his destination in 30 minutes after travelling 20 km distance, reaches his destination in one and a half hours, which makes it very difficult for employers, labourers and students to travel on a daily basis. The Regional Transport Authority (RTA) is giving no ears to problems faced by the general public. There are no restrictions on the number of passengers a van should carry and no specific fare is declared due to which the transport mafia charges the amount they want. Thus, due to the bad condition of local transport, people find it more comfortable to use motorbikes which results in loads of road accidents.

Rawalpindi local transport system should make improvements so that the journey becomes safer and cheaper for the public. The bus stops need up-gradation which includes the construction of waiting booths for passengers. The government especially the RTA should take serious notice of these issues and rectify the system with the help of City Traffic Police.
