ECP to issue notices to more lawmakers

ISLAMABAD: The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has decided to issue notices to more lawmakers with irregularities in their declaration of assets.

Some influential federal ministers and important lawmakers from the ruling party are also among those members who provided incorrect information about their assets. After the approval of the chief election commissioner, notices would be issued to them.

Sources told Daily Times that scrutiny of asset declaration is underway and some abnormalities were detected in the statements of more than 50 lawmakers.

Most of the parliamentarians had submitted details of their assets in 2013 at the time of contesting general elections, but they provided the same statements without making any change in the following years. Indiscretion was also found in the assets declaration of a former Khyber Pakhtunkhwa chief minister.

Some of the lawmakers have also told the ECP about the vehicles and houses, being used by their dependents, but they did not provide the details of these assets.

Sources said the ECP had not examined the declaration of assets submitted by lawmakers as it was considered just a formality in the past. These lawmakers would have to appear in front of the ECP to justify their assets. Those failing to satisfy the ECP would be issued notices.
