5 desi moments of ‘What will people say?’

Author: Amna Amir

What will people say (Log Kya kahay gay) has always brought a sad but sudden climax to every story of our life.

There is absolutely nothing more challenging than the ability of every individual that can drag them to greater distances in life until a person decides to fall for the infamous dialogue, ‘Log kyakahay gay.’

Don’t let people break you down. Don’t let them stop you from chasing your dreams because the minute you stop, is the minute you lose your track. So stuff your ears with plug the minute you hear someone approaching you with the ‘Log kyakahay gay’ banter.

Here are some situations that will evoke people to poke their sharply pointed noses in your business, I mean to say:

1) You have a best friend of the opposite gender

Boys get to hear:

“So she’s your friend! Will you marry her?“

“Wah bhai, bhabii set kerli apnay Bravo bro. Gimme some tips too!”

Girls get to listen:

“Astagfirulllah! You hang out with guys? You know he’s just fooling around”

“Bro-zone him before people start thinking ap logo ka scene on hai”.

2) You save up some cash and plan on spending it on a trip around Pakistan:

“Will you go on trip without your family? Beta, don’t try to be too modern. Our religion doesn’t allow us”.

“Are you going to waste away all that money? In this age you are supposed to hand over your earning to your parents.”

“Your cousin gives all his salary to his mother and then she goes shopping.”

3) You decide to opt for a major of your choice:

Psychology: “Oh God. Are you planning on becoming a doctor for the psychos? You are going to become a psycho yourself.

Arts: “What kind of a field is that? Don’t waste our money. “

Theatre/acting: “You are going to ruin the name of our family. What will people think of us? Are you trying to make sure that our family becomes a joke?”

Music: “We don’t want our child to be a Marassi. You will have no future in this field and you will be begging all your life.”

4) You don’t want to get married and the next number is yours:

“What will people say when they find out that our daughter is all grown up and still unmarried?”

“Your aunt has found several perfect matches for you and they are all American girls with nationalities and you STILL can’t agree to marry anyone of them. What will people say? “

5)When you fail on a test or exam in school/college/university:

This moment is the biggest tragedy of every student’s life.

Facing your parents and admitting them you have failed a test or exam is no less than the Day of Judgment for any student.

“Nalaik! Are you ashamed of yourself even once? You fail all the time!”

“Look at your cousin and be ashamed of yourself. He has topped his class once again.”

“People are mostly laughing at us because our son is such a duffer in studies. Quit studies and start working in as a laborer from tomorrow onwards”
