KHAIRPUR: The Shah Abdul Latif University’s (SALU) department of Pakistan Studies on Thursday, in collaboration with the Islamic Relief Pakistan (IRP), planted more than 100 saplings to officially initiate its participation in the country-wide ‘Clean and Green Pakistan’ drive launched by the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf-led government of Pakistan.

Reportedly, a seminar was also organised to raise awareness amongst youths and students about the grave consequences of climate change and global warming and significance of implementing measures to prevent air, water and plastic pollution.

Besides, human rights and environmental organisations’ representatives also participated in the drive.

In this regard, Prof Dr Muhammad Yousaf Khushk outlined environmental challenges being faced by Pakistan and urged students to put their efforts to make the country and their universities ‘neat and green’.

Moreover, faculty of Social Sciences Dean Prof Dr Imdad Hussain termed planting a tree as ‘an act of charity’, and said that it was our national responsibility to participate in the drive.

Department of Pakistan Studies Head Prof Inayatullah Bhatti expressed his gratitude to organisations for donating saplings to the university, and said that his department has been taking a lead in arranging curricular and co-curricular activities.

The SALU’s Media Coordinator Muhammad Ibrahim Khokhar said that ‘Green Campus’ has been the vision of Vice-Chancellor (VC) Prof Dr Parveen Shah, and he had planted 1,400 saplings in the university on August 14.

Several notables including Civil Hospital Khairpur Medical Superintendent Dr Muhammad Hussain Abro, surgeon and social activist Dr Murad Ali Khamisani, Khairpur district Zakat officer Saleem Tanvri, advocate Basheer Ahmed Waseem, Kazi Shakeel Ahmed, Hassan Kazim Junejo, Zaheer Ansari, Prof Dr Shabnam Naz Shaikh were also present on the occasion.

Scholars present thesis in PhD and MPhil research in SALU

Two research scholars from the faculty of Political Science and another scholar from the department of Teacher Education on Thursday presented their thesis in the Shah Abdul Latif University (SALU) in Khairpur.

A PhD scholar from the faculty of Political Science Ghulam Ali Gabol presented his doctoral thesis on “Good Governance in Pakistan (1999-2008): A Case Study of Pervez Musharraf Rule” under the supervision of Prof Dr Amir Ali Chandio.

Another PhD scholar from the Institute of International Relations Akhtar Hussain Majoka presented his research thesis on “Post Cold War Nato-Russia Relations: Case Study of Afghanistan and Kosovo” under the supervision of Prof Dr Amir Ahmed Khuhro.

In his address on the occasion, faculty of Social Sciences Dean Prof Dr Imdad Hussain Sahito lauded efforts of the scholars on successful completion of their researches.

A large number of research scholars, faculty members and university’s officials were also present on the occasion.

Later, an MPhil student from the department of Teacher Education Fida Hussain presented his thesis on “Impact of In-Service Training of TVET on Trainees professional Competency” under the supervision of Dr Jam Muhammad Zafar, the chairman of faculty of Teacher Education.

Meanwhile, faculty of Physical Sciences Dean Prof Dr Mumtaz Hussain Mahar termed research projects as “the backbone of development and innovation”, and subsequently declared their thesis successful.

SALU holds symposium on model United Nations

The Shah Abdul Latif University’s (SALU) Institute of International Relations (IR) and department of Peace and Conflict Studies on Wednesday commenced a two-day symposium on “Model United Nations” in collaboration with the Student Advancement Fund Endowment (SAFE) in Khairpur.

Reportedly, SALU Pro-Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Muhammad Yousuf Khushk presided over the opening session.

“Being a crucial intergovernmental organisation, the United Nations (UN) has achieved historic milestones of promoting international cooperation and creating and maintaining international order, however in the 21th century and particularly in post-9/11 geopolitical scenario, the role of the UN needs remodelling and a thorough examination is required to point out reasons of its failure in resolving long-term issues – for example Kashmir and Palestine disputes, and the Middle East crisis”, he said.

Meanwhile, IR Director Prof Dr Amir Ahmed Khuhro and Prof Ghulam Mustafa Buledi appreciated remarkable efforts of the UN in promoting cultural, educational and diplomatic relationships amongst its member countries.

He claimed that despite the organisation’s failure to resolve certain issues, its achievements regarding maintenance of peace and global security is needed to be praised.

SAFE Executive Director Prof Dr Sarfaraz Korejo shed light on the importance of the symposium, and appreciated VC Prof Dr Parveen Shah for providing such academic activities to students.

Prof Dr Liaquat Ali Chandio and Ibrahim Khokhar also spoke on the occasion.

During the symposium, students and scholars will discuss and analyse various aspects of the UN.

Prize distribution ceremony held

The Shah Abdul Latif University (SALU) on Thursday organised a prize distribution ceremony for its students who performed outstandingly in the three-day Youth Carnival (2018) organised by the Institute of Space Technology (IST) and All Pakistan Inter-University Declamation Contest (essay competitions) for the Award of Allama Iqbal Shield.

Reportedly, SALU Vice-Chancellor (VC) Prof Dr Parveen Shah presided over the ceremony at his secretariat of the university in Khairpur.

She distributed cash prizes and certificates amongst position holders, and lauded their efforts.

She asserted that co-curricular activities were the university’s soul in terms of cultural, intellectual, physical, social and spiritual learning.

“Delivering a passionate public debate is an art which requires practice and skills,” she said while appreciating efforts of the directorate of Student Affairs for promoting such co-curricular activities.

Students including Saifullah Shaikh, Javed Iqbal, Farzana Parveen, Ali Akbar Ghumro, Abdul Kareem Arain, Imran Ali, Mazhar Ali Phulpoto, Aisha Areej and Gul Khan Talani received cash prizes of Rs 5,000.
