Begging bowl

Author: Daily Times

Sir: When the PTI won the recent elections, many felt that the time had finally come when things would get done in Pakistan. When the government would no longer shirk from its responsibilities, and work for the betterment of society. Imran Khan’s first speech also inspired confidence and things seemed to be going well. However, there was one thing that made people a little confused.

When the new Prime Minister asked overseas Pakistanis to send money back to the country for the Dam fund. He asked for each overseas resident to send over a thousand dollars each for this endeavor. Many felt asking for aid from its citizens was perhaps a little beneath the government and leader of a sovereign country.

Recently the situation was further exacerbated because now the government is turning to its allies for assistance with their lack of finances. They want their ‘friends’ the Saudis and China for financial aid. So, from asking their citizens for money, now they have turned their begging bowls towards other countries. What is even more embarrassing is that they have not shown much interest in helping Pakistan out any more than they already do. If this avenue closes down as well, then what other options will remain for our nation?

Perhaps it would be better if the PM turns his focus on developing local industries and expanding the tax base, instead of whipping out the begging bowl each time Pakistan fces financial difficulties.
