ISLAMABAD: Reiterating support to the Kashmiris on ‘Kashmir Day’, former president Asif Ali Zardari has said on Sunday that the mass unrest and uprisings in Kashmir had made it imperative for the UN to take meaningful steps to resolve this issue.

“A resolution of the dispute in accordance with the wishes of the people is imperative both for the sake of the rights of the Kashmiris as well as for regional and global peace”, he said in a message on the occasion.

“Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) is committed to respect the fundamental rights of the people and finding a just, honourable and peaceful solution of the Kashmir dispute in accordance with the aspirations of its people,” he said.

The Party reiterated that the right to self-determination is a fundamental right enshrined in the UN Charter and cannot be wished away by manipulation, deceit or brute suppression, he said.

On this occasion, PPP wished to pay tributes to the brave people of Kashmir for their resolve and heroic sacrifices for the realization of their aspirations.

“While we commend the UN for bringing freedom to millions and dismantling apartheid and colonialism across countries and continents during the past over seven decades we are also baffled at the inability of the world body to resolve this issue”.
