NAB report says corruption has caused losses worth Rs 1.362bn to Sargodha University

Sargodha University has suffered a loss of Rs 1.362 billion due to the mismanagement and corruption of its former vice chancellor Dr Akram Chaudhary in establishing private sub-campuses, affiliation of private colleges, development projects and illegal appointments, reveal National Accountability Bureau documents.

According to the documents, the private sub-campuses made admissions over and above the approved number of seats, causing a loss of Rs 1,205 million to the university. They did not submit the examinations fee amounting to Rs 293 million neither the university’s share of Rs 38 million nor they paid the principal amount, late fee and excess admission fine amounting Rs 246 million.

It was further revealed that the Lahore campus admitted 9,346 students in excess of allowed limit and overcharged Rs 628 million from its students over and above the approved fee/dues. The campus admitted 526 students in MPhil programmes, 1,570 in Masters programmes, 6,592 in BS programmes and 658 in Doctor of Physiotherapy discipline. The campus also enrolled students in such programmes, which were not even offered by the main campus.

Mandi Bahauddin campus admitted 3,921 students in various undergraduate and post-graduate programmes including 240 MPhil students over and above the approved number of seats.

Citing the irregularities committed by the former VC, the documents note that the university suffered a loss of more than Rs 157 million due to the mismanagement in development projects undertaken during his tenure.
