118MW coal plant opened in Karachi

KARACHI: The inauguration ceremony of 118MW coal power plant was held on Monday at Port Qasim, Karachi.

Management of Fauji Fertiliser Bin Qasim Limited (FFBL) envisaged the plant in 2012 due to the ongoing energy crisis. The plant is capable of generating 118MW electricity and has entered into long-term off take agreements for 30 years. It will provide 52MW electricity to K-Electric on sustained basis along with meeting electricity and steam requirements of FFBL plant.

Speaking on the occasion, President Mamnoon Hussain felicitated the project team on the timely commencement of the plant.

On the occasion, various foreign and local dignitaries were in attendance including Sindh Governor Muhammad Zubair, Chairman FPCL Lt Gen (r) Khalid Nawaz, FPCL CE&MD Lt Gen (r) Haroon Aslam, FPCL CE&MD designate Lt Gen (r) Javed Iqbal, FPCL Group General Manager Finance Aamir Ahsan, FPCL Project Manager Nauman Younas and South Korean envoy.

The plant is capable of using both imported and indigenous coal as its fuel. The project features a completely covered coal yard with extensive plantation and strict environmental control system to have minimum impact on the environment.

The continuous efforts of project engineering, construction team and supply chain department for ensuring timely supplies at most compatible prices, role of administration and other supporting departments were also praised by Khalid Nawaz.

Haroon Aslam commended the project team for their strong in-house technical capabilities coupled with vigor, enthusiasm and hard work. He stated that the successful completion of this plant is FFBL’s contribution towards Pakistan’s Power self-sufficiency.

To complete and commission a unique and capital intensive coal based power generation facility within two years was challenging, said Aamir Ahsan. He acknowledged and expressed gratitude to all the local financial institutions, who are lenders in the project, for their timely support throughout the various stages of the project. He added that support of contractors and partners like Northern Heavy Industry, Hyundai Heavy Industries, General Electric, ABB, DESCON, NESPAK, OMS and K?Electric proved invaluable in realizing this dream.

The inauguration ceremony was concluded by unveiling the plaque and distribution of shields by Mamnoon Hussain.
