India calls off foreign ministers meeting in New York

NEW DELHI: The Indian government has called off the meeting of foreign ministers of Pakistan and India, which was scheduled in New York on the side lines of United Nation General Assembly (UNGA) later this month.

The spokesperson of Indian ministry of external affair Raveesh Kumar confirmed that India has canceled the meeting between Shah Mehmood Qureshi and his Indian counterpart Sushma Swaraj and will not go forward in this regard.

Raveesh Kumar said that there is no point in holding talks with Pakistan.

The meeting was schedule for September 27.

Earlier, Indian Ministry of External Affairs confirmed that Pakistani Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi and his Indian counterpart Sushma Swaraj will meet in New York this month.

Following a letter from Prime Minister Imran Khan to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, India has confirmed that Qureshi and Sushma Swaraj will meet on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York later this month.

The Indian spokesperson said that meeting will be held on the request of Pakistan as “India has accepted the suggestions of Pakistani Prime Minister.”

Earlier, Prime Minister Imran Khan wrote a letter to his Indian counterpart and invited him to restart the dialogue between the two countries. The letter is believed to have been written in response to the Indian primer’s letter congratulating him for assuming office.

According to the media reports, PM Modi is his latter written on August 20 had called for a “meaning full and constructive” engagement between the two countries.

Dr Faisal in his tweet said “PM has responded to PM Modi in a positive spirit, reciprocating his sentiments. Let’s talk and resolve all issues. We await formal response from India.”
