US welcomes proposed dialogue between Pakistan, India

Pompeo emphasises Pakistan’s role for bringing peace in Afghanistan: US State Dep

WASHINGTON: The United States (US) welcomed breakthrough between Pakistan and India on Friday saying that representatives of the two countries will get a chance to ponder over various issues in proposed meeting next month which is a good sign.

Indian Ministry of External Affairs confirmed that Pakistani Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi and his Indian counterpart Sushma Swaraj will meet this month on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York later this month.

Spokesperson for the US Department of State Heather Nauert said the US backs dialogue between the two countries. She added that the US is also aware of exchange of positive messages between Prime Minister Imran Khan and Indian counterpart Narendra Modi and that such exchanges would create a pathway to reconciliation.

Earlier, Prime Minister Imran Khan wrote a letter to his Indian counterpart and invited him to restart the dialogue between the two countries. The letter is believed to have been written in response to the Indian primer’s letter congratulating him for assuming office.

According to the media reports, PM Modi is his latter written on August 20 had called for a “meaning full and constructive” engagement between the two countries.
