ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) government and the opposition on Tuesday agreed to form a parliamentary committee to investigate alleged rigging in General Elections 2018.

A resolution was presented in the National Assembly by PTI vice president and Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi on Tuesday proposing formation of the committee to probe into alleged rigging in the polls.

“We have pondered over opposition’s reservations regarding the 2018 polls and believe that transparency must be guaranteed at all costs. For that reason, a special committee, head by the ruling party, will be formed to probe into the matter,” Qureshi said while addressing the assembly session.

However, there are differences over committee headship. The ruling party wants one of its own members to head the committee, while Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) and Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) want an opposition leader to chair the probing unit.

PPP leader Shazia Marri took to the floor and recommended that the government and opposition should have equal representation in the committee. “The leader of the opposition in NA should chair the committee to ensure the probe is transparent,” she added. Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leader Khurram Dastgir shared similar sentiments.
