Poor sanitation heightens risk of infectious diseases in Khairpur
Most high-density suburbs, home to a disproportionately huge population of 80 neighbourhoods of Khairpur, are plagued by uncollected heaped garbage piles, numerous sewer blockages and spillages from decrepit infrastructure.
Reportedly, residents on Sunday expressed fears about spread of infectious diseases due to ‘seemingly’ harmless piles of trash at street-corners as sanitation staff refuse to collect garbage littered on roads over unknown reasons.
Meanwhile, residents accused officers of municipal committees of severe negligence and incompetence, and revealed that sanitation staff only lifted piles of trash when complaints against them were increased.
Gutters were overflowing and most of the roads were flooded with sewage water because no sanitation staff had worked properly for a long time in the localities including Sirai Ghanwer Khan, Bachal Shah, Tarique House area, Shaheedabad, Altaf Colony, Abid Colony.
A social worker Farhan Mahar informed the media that he had lodged several complaints with the North Sindh Urban Services Corporation Limited (NSUSC)-Sukkur and requested councillors of municipal committees, but to no avail.
He appealed to the Khairpur Deputy Commissioner, NSUSC authorities and Tehsil Municipal Administration (TMA) to lift heaps of garbage and ensure proper attendance of sanitation staff or otherwise, citizens reserve right to file a petition in the Sindh High Court (SHC) for resolution of their issues.
