Author: Zarmeena Iqbal

All the theaters of the city will remain close till the 10th of Moharram (Ashura) on the directives of the Deputy Commissioner (DC) Multan Mudassir Riyaz. However, the cinemas are directed by the district government not to screen any movie after the 6th of Moharram (Monday) till the 10th of Moharram (Friday).

The DC, while talking to the journalists, said that the step was taken in view of the respect of the holy month. He urged the masses and showbiz community to promote true spirit and purpose of Moharram by practicing tolerance, modesty, respect for humanity, compassion and truthfulness as guided by the grandson of Holy Prophet (PBUH).

The DC warned that strict action would be taken against the owners of cinemas and theaters in case of any violation of the directives issued by the district administration.

Zawar Hussain Baloch, president artists and cinemas association south Punjab and a renowned producer, said that despite imposing a ban on the theaters and cinemas the district government should allow the screening of documentaries and movies based on the life of Hazrat Imam Hussain (RA) and event of Karbala to spread the true meaning of the greatest sacrifice made by Hazrat Imam Hussain (RA). He said that the imposition of ban depicts that the artists do not respect the month of Moharram. He further said that a positive message of tolerance, peace and sacrifice can be given through theatrical performances in a best manner that will leave long-lasting imprints in the minds of audience.

On the other hand, the actresses of theater, after the issuance of directives by the district government, have cancelled all their performances. Theater Artists Deedar Multani, Iram Khan and Aima Khan said that the artists will resume work after the 12th of Moharram and till then they will participate in the religious gatherings and processions held in their homes and neighborhood.
