CJP assures protection of transgender person’s rights

ISLAMABAD: Chief Justice of Pakistan Justice Mian Saqib Nisar decided on Wednesday to ensure the protection of transgender person’s rights.

A three-member bench of the Supreme Court (SC), headed by the Justice Nisar, was hearing a case pertaining to the rights of transgender persons today (Wednesday).

As the session commenced, CJP ordered to issue notices to the non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) government regarding the basic rights of transgender persons.

The apex court judge observed that transgender persons are being mocked in our society. “Giving transgender persons their basic rights is our topmost priority,” CJP remarked.

Furthermore, CJP stressed that the court wants to provide protection to transgender persons and solve their problems.

Justice Nisar then asked the National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) chairman, who was present at the hearing session, that whether the national identity cards of all petitioners were issued or not. To this, the chairman responded that the process is underway.

CJP then stressed that SC wanted to add transgender persons in the national database.

Noting that solid actions should be taken to facilitate transgender persons on priority, CJP observed that the community the community is mocked, murdered, and insulted specially in KP. “Such incidents bring bad name to the country,” Justice Nisar stated.

Furthermore, the apex court inquired about the unverified information on the websites regarding the murder of transgenders.

The secretary commission informed the court that an NGO, Blue Veins, was spreading incorrect information regarding the number of transgenders murdered in the country.

The bench then sought suggestions for providing rights to transgenders within two weeks. A notice was issued to the owner of the Blue Veins website.

The session was then adjourned till September 26.
