Cracking down on electricity theft

Author: Daily Times

Sir: The Economic Coordination Committee (ECC) recently announced that it plans on cracking down on electricity theft, one of the main drivers behind the ‘line-losses’ which cause so much load-shedding in this country. It should be remembered that right after the 2013 General Elections, the previous government had also made the exact same claim but failed to end electricity theft.

The Pakistani people cannot afford to be bamboozled on this front again. The media should play its due role by doing reports on monthly DISCO reports so that it can be ascertained by how much the PTI government has successfully reduced line-losses. Furthermore, instead of wasting money by investing in additional power plants, the government should renovate the country’s ailing power distribution system so that power can reach the consumer easily and efficiently.
