The Speaker National Assembly (NA) of Pakistan, Asad Qaiser, on Tuesday, said that the Women Parliamentary Caucus (WPC) in the NA was a significant achievement of women parliamentarians.
He further said that the Caucus had provided women a forum where they could work for the development, empowerment and emancipation of women above the party politics. He expressed these views while talking to the general assembly of WPC at the Parliament House.
Qaiser shared his experience of working with the WPC as the Speaker of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KPK) Assembly with the participants of the meeting. Highlighting the role of the WPC, the Speaker said that the Caucus’ central task was to evolve consensus on gender issues on a bipartisan basis. He said that there was no denying the fact that the participation of women was imperative for the socio-economic development of state and society. No headway in this regard could be made without their visible and active participation, he added.
“It is high time that we recognize the meaningful role of women and take substantial steps for ensuring equal participation of the women by accepting the fact that the Constitution of Pakistan promises dignity, freedom and equality to all citizens and forbids discrimination on the basis of gender”, the Speaker added.
The Speaker said that the women in our society were confronting severe problems regarding the education, healthcare and employment. He said that there was an immediate need to change the mindset and perception of people to protect women rights and to bring them into the mainstream. Qaiser added that Pakistan demonstrated a sincere commitment to the international human rights treaties endorsing women rights and gender equality in the society. The country encouraged women participation parallel to men in various fields of socio-economic and political sphere, he said.
On this occasion, the member parliament, Munaza Hassan, was unanimously elected the Secretary of the WPC. The Patron of WPC, Fehmida Mirza, and former Secretary, Shaista Pervaiz Malik, also briefed the participants about the working and achievements of the WPC.
