Valentine’s Day: be single, be smart and be rich

Author: Amna Amir

With Valentine’s Day just a day away, everyone is suffering from ‘love fever’. Red dresses, red lipsticks, chocolates, red heels, big hearts, teddy bears, chocolates, candybars, chocolate cakes and cookies, red roses, and did I mention chocolates? The list goes on and on.

For a girl, this day is all about being showered with roses and gifts, whereas for a boy, he is about to hit rock bottom and lose all of his savings unless of course he is dating someone who believes in equality and buys him expensive items in return. Considering the society we live in, men are always held to a different standard when it comes to financial pressure and on a day like Valentine’s Day their chances of going bankrupt increase exponentially.

Wanting to belong with someone or to someone is never a bad idea, unless it’s an abusive relationship that gets the two of you nowhere. However, if this year you find yourself in the ‘forever alone zone’ and 14 February is making you feel left out, you need to realise that being on your own is liberating and the kind of rush you feel when you focus on yourself more than others is quite empowering.

Fasten your seat belts, because we are going to take you through a very refreshing and inspiring ride that will help you realise that being single is the new trend these days.

Here are five reasons why:

1) For all the dates out there, they are in the danger zone because Maya Khan is out there to catch them red handed on Valentine’s Day. So the ones that are sailing single, you have nothing to worry about because she will have no reason to accost and harass you.

2) You are saving money and not giving into the vicious capitalistic cycle and then later feeling guilty about it. Instead of spending all that money on others, you might be able to save your fortune and act like a princess if not a queenor a prince. Remember one step at a time.

3) Sadly, our society has two categories of love stories. One is the Halal version while the other one is the infamous zone of dating that has some serious consequences if your parents find out about your ‘bae’. So, if you aren’t single on a day like Valentine’s Day and you need to be out with your ‘babe’, you will have to lie and then lie again and then the chain will go on until you finally end up opening Pandora’s Box into your life. So consider yourself lucky because ‘I must tell no lies’ is a lesson we’ve learned very well from Harry Potter.

4) You don’t need a reason to dress up all glamorously in red, with red lipsticks and high heels just for the sake of it. As for the boys, you won’t have to put in extra efforts to impress the dream girl of your life. Being noticed is one thing but trying too hard to get noticed just for the sake of Valentine’s Day is clearly a hopeless move. So if you are single, embrace it. Don’t let people become the source of your happiness. Be in control of your happiness and don’t rely on a day like Valentine’s day to decide whether you want to dress up and look good for someone or you want to make all those efforts for your own self.

5) Last but not the least, don’t limit yourself to just one person, rather look around you and you will have a lot of people that you emotionally connect with. Clearly, we are referring to your friends! Drag your girlies or bros for a movie. Movies such as Jolly LLB2 and Balu Mahi is screening these days. If movies aren’t your thing, try Netflix and chill and if you aren’t into indoor entertainment, go shopping or grab dinner together. The point being, focus on your friends in a time like this because they need you as much as you need someone. If you thought it’s really sad being a lonely person on a day like Valentine’s day, don’t worry, you have been forever alone throughout the year so one day can make no difference.
