Education and economy

Author: Daily Times

Sir: Though this part of the world is suffering from many economic and social problems, there are multiple solutions possible too. Educating various segments of society, with equal opportunities for all, is one such solution. But it is often neglected, giving the paucity of funds and resources as a reason.

There is an abundance of human resources, which can be developed through education for the common good of all, socially and economically. It does not matter much how meagre funds are, because what is hindering education is not paucity of funds but many small obstacles making education almost inaccessible to those who aspire for it.

A few instances of such obstructions are: needless procedures at all levels of education, unfriendly environment for students and teachers, needless importance given to marks obtained while neglecting overall ability, difficulties for students in getting testimonials, tests even after passing an examination, etc.

The circumstances in which students are taught and asked to take their examinations are not conducive to quality education. Students and teachers go through many unnecessary formalities throughout an academic year. Equal opportunities and simple academic procedures are imperatives for intellectual, social and economic progress of society. Education for all should be made compulsory.

All human beings should be treated equally, as long as they keep within the limits of decency, for making choices that they think good for themselves. Presently, all those who are related to education in any capacity know that there are many needless obstacles for those who strive to get quality education for becoming compatible with the social and economic needs of the 21st century. As such, obstacles can be removed by a little care for students, teachers and education. Quality education for all is possible, even with insufficient resources.
