Balochistan to have first woman chief justice

Justice Tahira Safdar has been appointed as the chief justice of Balochistan High Court (BHC). It is the first ever appointment of a female on the post of any high court’s chief justice in Pakistan.

According to details, Justice Tahira Safdar will swear in for the top post on Saturday.

The decision to appoint Ms. Tahira was taken by the Chief Justice of Pakistan Mian Saqib Nisar.

Ms Tahira will be succeeding Muhammad Noor Musjabzai who retired from the post of chief justice of Balochistan Hight Court on Friday.

Ms. Tahira was born in Quetta in 1957. She is the daughter of Syed Imtiaz Hussain Baqri. She achieved her degree in law from Quetta Law College in the year 1980. She was also appointed as the first female civil judge in 1982. She has also received her Masters degree in Urdu Literature from Balochistan University. She became Sr. Civil Judge in 1987, Additional District and Session Judge in 1991 and, District and Session Judge in 1996. Justice Safdar has worked as a presiding officer in the labour court and was appointed a member of the Balochistan Services Tribunal in 1998. In 2009 she was made chairperson of the tribunal. During that time she was elevated to the position of additional judge of the Balochistan High Court and later was confirmed as a judge in 2011.
