Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) lawmaker, Dr Imran Shah has been asked to pay a fine of Rs0.5 million (mn) and treat 20 orthopaedic patients for free by the PTI disciplinary committee.

The PTI parliamentarian had been suspended from the party for a month after a video of him beating up a civil servant, later identified as Dawood Chauhan went viral on social media. The PTI leader was largely criticised for his conduct following the incident. The PTI leadership had forwarded his case to the disciplinary committee for further action.

While addressing a press conference at Insaf House on Saturday, Karachi PTI president Firdous Shamim Naqvi said that no individual had the right to take law in their hands. He said that elected representatives had added responsibility to ensure that the law was enforced and never abused. The president of PTI’s Karachi chapter then informed the media that Dr Imran Shah had been directed to pay a fine amounting to Rs0.5 mn which would be donated to Edhi Homes and Orphanage Centre. He added that Shah was also asked to treat of 20 orthopaedic patients recommended by Edhi Trust at his clinic.

According to Firdous Shamim Naqvi, Dr Shah had also been warned against acting this way in the future. He said that Shah was told that his name might get struck off from the party membership if he did not improve his conduct.

Reportedly, this decision was taken by Justice (retd) Rana Zaki who was heading the disciplinary committee.

On August 17, the PTI issued Dr Shah a show-cause notice and suspended him for a month for beating up a man in Karachi. According to Karachi PTI President, Shah’s actions were not acceptable and he was given an opportunity to present his version of the story.

After facing criticism from the public as well as his own party, Dr Shah went to Dawood’s home and apologised to him.
