ISLAMABAD: The government has appointed Aizaz Chaudhry as ambassador to the United States.The official announcement was made by the Foreign Office on Wednesday. On Monday, Tehmina Janjua, Pakistan’s permanent representative to the United Nations (UN) in Geneva, was appointed as the new Foreign Secretary. Chaudhry will begin his new assignment next month. Sources informed Daily Times that a large reshuffle of envoys is expected soon.
They added that Naghmana A. Hashmi, ambassador to Belgium; Nadeem Riaz, ambassador to Italy; Aisha Riaz, ambassador to Austria; and Zehra Akbari, ambassador to Portugal recently met Adviser to the Prime Minister on Foreign Affairs, Sartaj Aziz, and the PM’s Special Assistant on Foreign Affairs, Tariq Fatemi. Their offices may also be altered, but it will take some time.
Aizaz Chaudhry is a career Foreign Service Officer with over 36 years of bilateral and multilateral experience in diplomacy. Presently, he is serving as the Foreign Secretary and has been in this role since December 2013. Earlier, he served as the Foreign Ministry’s spokesman. He is the author of “Pakistan Mirrored to Dutch Eyes”. Chaudhry, born on February 27, 1958, has a master’s degree in International Relations from Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy, Medford, Massachusetts, and a Bachelor of Science degree from Punjab University, Lahore.
