Drunkard ‘sets wife on fire’ over petty issue

ISLAMABAD: A drunken man allegedly set ablaze his wife over a petty issue on Wednesday.According to details, the police arrested the accused, Ashir, while the woman was shifted to the burn centre of Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) in a critical condition, as 80 percent of her body was affected by the flames. The incident took place at a slum of Sector G-8/1.

The victim, in her statement, told the police that her husband was a habitual drinker and usually came home late after getting drunk. She said that the accused subjected her to torture on a daily basis. “When I asked him not to drink, he drenched me in gasoline and set fire.” On the other hand, the brother of the accused claimed that it was a case of self-immolation. The relatives of both the husband and wife have levelled allegations against each other.

Karachi Company Police Station SHO Rana Mubarik told this scribe that the woman first stated that she attempted self-immolation, but later on changed her statement and accused her husband. He said that though the police have apprehended the accused, they were reviewing the matter minutely. He said that the investigation of the case would be completed soon.
