KARACHI: Muhammad Ahmed, the young student who was allegedly tortured by his teacher, on Thursday arrived in the United States for medical treatment at the Cincinnati Children’s Hospital, Ohio.

Ahmed had been studying at te Larkana cadet College when, in November of last year, he was allegedly tortured by his teacher as punishment to such a degree that he was left mute and paralysed.

According to the patient’s father Muhammad Rashid, Ahmed is under observation till February 17, after which his doctor Mike Ritter will decide to operate. He also informed sources that it would take at least three months for his son’s treatment to be completed.

He remarked that his son’s treatment would not have been underway had it not been for media sources having taken notice of the incident and brought it to the public and relevant authorities’ light.

He had been taken to the Jinnah Post Graduate Medical College (JPMC) for medical examination by a board of doctors in late November, after calls for his assistance had grown. The board declared that Ahmed’s throat had been broken in several places and advised that he be sent abroad for further treatment.

Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah, in November, had approved his treatment and directed the health department to make the necessary travel arrangements for Ahmed and his father.
