The top four trends from New York Fashion Week Spring 2017

Stripes

From the bold and beautiful to the classic and restrained, many runways shared an appreciation for the straight and narrow. “Stripes are the equivalent to what a white t-shirt used to be back in the day,” says Roopal Patel, fashion director of Saks Fifth Avenue.

Sneakers are not going anywhere. There’s no denying that sneakers are absolutely huge these days – the global market for athletic footwear is bigger than it’s ever been, and shows no sign of slowing down. Girl, you’ve got more collecting to do. Luckily for our feet, the sneaker is the ultimate Sprig to Summer shoe.

Mule

This season’s shoes are mule, and they’re practically everywhere. Popularised by Marilyn Monroe, Mule is a style of shoe that is backless and often closed-toed. Whether a floral adorned flat, a chunky heel, or a sleek stiletto, the new mule is something you’ll want to slip into.

Oxfords with a twist

The white oxford shirt is a basic item of clothing that pretty much every girl has in her closet. This season the designers have added a twist to the classic striped button-down, by adding flounces, slashing shoulders, and super-sizing the silhouette, stripping it of any stale, corporate connotations in the process.

Artistically inspired

“There was an artistically inspired theme across the runways,” says Kate Foley, contributing fashion director of Vestiaire Collective. Each collection is an opportunity for a new design expression. Designers constantly seek to use arts and crafts in their efforts to conserve and revive them.
