ECP to hear case against Imran Khan for contentious vote casting

ISLAMABAD: Chairman Pakistan Tehrik-e-Insaf Imran Khan will appear before the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) for suo moto action taken against him for his contentious vote casting during the general elections.

Khan breached electoral rules when he publicly stamped his ballot paper in NA-53 rather than cast his vote behind the privacy of a voting screen. Even though Khan was victorious in NA-53, ECP has withheld his victory notification due to this pending case.

As per Section 185 of the Election Act, this offense could carry a six months jail sentence, possibly along with a fine of Rs1000. Khan contested from five different national assembly seats, winning all of them.

Pakistanis voted in general elections on July 25, with PTI emerging as the single largest party.
