The Livestock Department on Sunday launched a fumigation drive to ward off Congo virus in cattle markets established on Super Highway and other areas of Karachi.
The department displayed awareness banners inside and outside of all animal markets set up in the different areas of Karachi. Awareness pamphlets were also distributed among the people.
So far almost 100,000 animals have arrived in various markets of the city.
The department had earlier warned of Congo virus spread in the city due to of a massive inter-provincial and inter-district movement of cattle. Also the authorities concerned were directed to take immediate necessary steps and arrangements in this regard.
In view of the expected frequent movement of sacrificial animals and their slaughter on Eidul Azha, the municipal authorities all over the province were strictly directed to undertake an extensive fumigation campaign for eliminating Congo virus and ensuring foolproof arrangements for removal and safe disposal of offal and animal wastes.
Last year, Congo virus claimed a life in Peshawar and four cases were surfaced in Khyber Paktunkhwa.
