Why it is vital to strike the right balance between present and future

Author: Nadia Ahmed Uqaili

Often, we spend a lot of thought and time in making plans for our future and building up our days in a way that we eventually reach a point where these plans turning to reality can be possible.

Doing so is completely normal and actually highly beneficial – to think about what you want your life to be like in the future and then taking steps to make sure you get there and deserve it. However, sometimes we get too caught up in doing so and forget to enjoy the time and type of days we have in the moment.

It is highly important to think of the future and make decisions about it earlier on in life so that when the time comes to move on from one stage of life to another we don’t find ourselves in any serious trouble – the kind that could financially or morally ruin our days.

But does that really mean we have to spend each and every waking moment planning it out? No.

We, as mortals, cannot control every single happening of our life, nor can we know exactly what the future holds. Hence, we should plan out the future and daily do a little something that helps us take a step towards what we want to achieve but not spend our entire time and energy trying to get there. Taking breaks to spend time with family, doing a leisurely activity we personally relish and taking a breather are all things that are valuable to have a healthy and prosperous life.

However, some people have a habit of living in the now to such a great extent that they hardly think of the future at all. They do so even to the point where they have a work or school related deadline approaching in just a few hours and yet are least concerned about getting the job done.

This is the flip side to the previously discussed matter and also an inappropriate and toxic approach towards life.

If you don’t care for the future at all and only narrow your sight to see the now you are living in, the future can be disastrous.

Somewhat having an idea of what the future looks like for you even though you cannot, by any means, control every aspect of it, holds great importance. As stated above, taking small steps everyday towards the life you prefer to have in the future should be a way of life. Ignoring this responsibility as a human being can lead to grave problems in the future that cannot be avoided in any way except for thinking of the time to come, before it actually does.

To sum it all up, living in the now is important and not letting the fear of the unknown future consume your present is key in life.

However, always keeping a mind map of what the future should look like for you and embarking upon journeys that lead you to that future, every single day, also holds tremendous significance in everyone’s life.

Indeed it’s true what they say – it’s good to live in the now, but the great thing about now is that there’s another one tomorrow.
