ISLAMABAD: Islamabad Police has failed to recover 79 per cent vehicles and 83 per cent motorcycles stolen in the last three years.
During 2014-16, the residents of the capital city were deprived of 1389 vehicles and 884 motorcycles.
Contrary to the claims made by the higher ups of Islamabad Police time to time regarding efficient performance of police, it could only recover 291 vehicles and 147 motorcycles, which is a question mark on the performance of the law enforcement agencies.
The aforementioned details were shared with the Senate of Pakistan by Interior Minister Nisar Ali Khan while answering to a question asked by Senator Talha Mehmood.
Although, the figures revealed the poor performance of Islamabad Police in recovering stolen vehicles and motorcycles, but one thing is positive and satisfactory for citizens that the ratio of car/motorcycle thefts on annual basis has been reduced in the last three years. Around 766 vehicles and 442 motorcycles in 2014, 369 vehicles and 263 in 2015 and 254 vehicles and 179 motorcycles in 2016 were reported missing by the citizens which shows that the rate of car and motorcycle theft has been reduced.
It was also told to the Upper House of the Parliament that Islamabad Police had adopted several measures including awareness campaigns, community involvement, surveillance, establishment of check posts on entry and exit points of the city, token system in the parking of peculiar places and motivating citizens to hire private guards to minimise car theft from the city.
Furthermore, the already installed cameras under the Safe City Project are also being used by the police to trace the stolen vehicle and arrest the accused.
A list of the previous convicts in car theft have been prepared and distributed amongst all quarters concerned to interrogate them during the investigation of car theft cases.
The minister further stated that a special anti-car lifting cell was working under the supervision of SP Investigation to control car and motor bike theft.
