Sir: Corruption has been a thorn in Pakistan’s side for as long as I can remember, and even though every time a new political party comes to power they promise to tackle this huge problem, none have made any headway in this regard. Now the PTI have managed to win the elections, and a large part of their appeal was their leader, Imran Khan’s assertion that he would completely eradicate corruption as soon as he became Prime Minister.
While pledges like these have been made in the past as well, this time, people did feel like Imran would make good on his promise and actually bring about the change he has been promising for so long. Yet, now the PTI can be seen clamouring to get the votes of several independent candidates that not only have active corruption cases on going, or have been involved in corrupt practices in the past.
Perhaps Imran himself might not be as corrupt as some of our past leaders, but recruiting such dishonest people in to his party and giving them control over people’s lives, is as bad as anything Nawaz or Zardari could have done. If Mr. Khan had been true to his word, then this would have been the perfect opportunity to rid the country of these unpardonable people. However, as things stand at the moment, his priorities seem to lie someplace else.
