ECP gears up for presidential polls

ISLAMABAD: Presidential elections are likely to be held either in the last week of August or the first week of September according to a summary prepared by the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) on Tuesday.

The tenure of President Mamnoon Hussain will end on September 9 and as required by the constitution, the electoral body has prepared and submitted a summary of the presidential election to the chief election commissioner. The final schedule for election will be issued after the national and provincial legislatures take oath. According to the constitution, presidential elections should be held no later than 30 days before the completion of the constitutional term of the president. In Pakistan, the president is elected through a secret ballot by the electoral college. The electoral college comprises of the National Assembly, Senate and the four provincial assemblies. Provincial assemblies have an equal say in the election.
