ECP seeks report on ballots found in dumpster

The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) on Monday directed the Sindh commissioner and the district returning officers to file a detailed report on allegations of stamped ballot papers found from a dumpster in Karachi’s Qayyumabad area

The ballot papers mentioned candidates who contested the polls from the NA-241 and PS-160 constituencies. Further, voter cards were also found alongside the ballot papers.

Taking notice of media reports, the electoral body ordered the provincial election commissioner, district returning officer, and returning officer to submit a detailed report on the matter.

ECP Spokesperson Altaf Khan said strict measures would be taken against those found responsible for the incident.

Earlier, Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) leader Saeed Ghani had accused the ECP of massive rigging during the July 25 polls.

Ghani had claimed that thousands of ballot papers were recovered from a garbage dump in Qayyumabad. “Most of the ballot papers bore the PPP stamp, which clearly indicated that PPP had been systematically sidelined,” he alleged, announcing that the party had decided to legally challenge the results of the NA-241 constituency.

He said that PPP had pointed out irregularities in the general elections on the very same day.
