Caretaker cabinet approves policy for utilisation of luxury vehicles

KARACHI: The Sindh government in compliance to an order issued by the Supreme Court of Pakistan (SCP) retrieved 149 luxury vehicles from former cabinet members and government officers and parked them in the government transport pool for utilizing them according to the uniform policy framed by the federal government.

This was disclosed in the farewell caretaker cabinet meeting held under the chairmanship of Sindh Caretaker Chief Minister Fazal-ur-Rehamn on Monday at the CM House.

The agenda of the meeting was to discuss a suo moto case regarding the utilization of luxury vehicles by the ministers and the officers beyond their entitlement.

In the meeting, the caretaker cabinet was informed that following the directives of the SCP, the federal government, after consulting the provincial governments, formulated a strategy for the utilisation and disposal of luxury vehicles retrieved from ministers and senior officers.

During the meeting, Chief Secretary Major (retd) Azam Suleman with the approval of the caretaker chief minister proposed that all the retrieved luxury vehicles be placed at the disposal of the respective protocol wing of CM’s secretariat, governor secretariat and Services General Administration & Coordination Department (SGA&CD) for protocol purposes of dignitaries.

It was also proposed during the meeting that all retrieved luxury vehicles of district administration be placed at the disposal of the commissioners and deputy commissioners for protocol purposes and for usage based on geographical considerations.

It was suggested that bullet-proof vehicles be provided to public office holders after making proper assessment based on potential threat and security requirement through Armoured Vehicles’ Entitlement Committee

The cabinet approved all the proposals and requested the Sindh chief secretary to submit the formulated SOP to SCP on August 6, 2018.

The caretaker cabinet meeting was attended by all the cabinet members, Sindh Chief Secretary Major (retd) Azam Suleman, Sindh IG Amjad javed Saleemi, Planning and Development Chairman Mohammad Waseem, Principal Secretary to CM Sohail Rajput, provincial secretaries and other relevant officers.
